Gillingham’s launch of a centenary kit for the 2012/13 season has received mixed reactions from fans after it was unveiled on Monday.
The Gills will celebrate 100 years of being called Gillingham after changing their name from New Brompton officially in 1893, a year after having used it for the first time.
To commemorate the 100 year anniversary, The Gills have decided to go back to the style of the kit they wore back in 1893, but fans have been mixed in their reaction to the home shirt which is predominantly red.
Reacting to the news, Gills fans had this to say on our facebook page:
Graham Adams: “Just one word. Terrible.”
Vicky Ashton-Jones: “Think it looks horrific at the moment, although it’s different so maybe it’s a grower.”
Keith Pestell: “Use the blue one as the home one! 1912/1913 is the only season we have worn red at home in our history!!”
Jackie Green: “Awful. Worst shirts I’ve ever seen! We all thought it was a joke at first.”
The shirts will be available for sale some time in July with Chairman Paul Scally offering a special offer to season ticket holders who pre-order their shirts:
“As an additional bonus, we are offering a special deal to the first 2,000 adult season ticket holders who purchase/renew their season tickets next season.
“For every adult season ticket purchase we will allow you to redeem a voucher in our shop whereby for just £60 you can purchase both the home and away historic collector’s shirt, a once-in-a-lifetime offer for a special piece of club history.
“Stocks will be limited and this offer is strictly for season ticket holders only and applicable to adult-sized shirts.”
The home shirt is predominantly red with blue sleeves, whilst the away strip is mostly blue with red sleeves.
With The Gills having only changed their kit to the current three in use back in the summer, it will be interesting to see what the uptake of the new kit will be.
